Voluntary work offered - small charity in North London

Born in 1951, with a mobility disability, since childhood, I have amassed a huge textual and photographic survey of places of interest in the British isles. It is fully inclusive, catering for residents and tourists alike, the able-bodied and disabled or those on low income. A photograph saves 1000 words, and, by extensive use of photographs taken at each site, the survey shows any visitor exactly what to expect and see at each site, and whether it is suitable for their particular needs, and, if disabled, for their mobility, sensory and learning impairments. I am currently seeking funding/sponsorhip to make the whole survey available on the internet.

Since 1992, I have had ME without remission so have to cope with constant physical fatigue, low energy, and muscle pain. Because of this, I urgently need reliable, supportive volunteers for the following.

-Executive Assistant(s) to assist me with correspondence and co-ordinating other volunteers

-DIY Volunteer(s) to help with a wide range of maintenance tasks. (The charity’s building was built in 1938.)

-Volunteer Drivers (using their vehicle or mine) to enable me to keep the photographic survey updated (in trips both inside and outside of London)

-Computer volunteers

  1. to advise on hardware and software problems when they arise and select the best, inexpensive purchases. (I am keeping the charity going on a shoestring.)
  2. to assist on cataloguing and digitising the huge number of celluloid photographs.

If you feel that you can help in any way, please initially drop me a line – currently the survey is only open by prior appointment – to Mr McNiel, Founder, The Centaur Project, 313-315 Caledonian Rd., London N1 1DR.

The charity is on bus routes nos 17, 91, 259 and 274, and is 100 yds from Caledonian Rd Network Rail station (on the North London line) and 560 yds from the Tube station. It is outside the congestion charge area, and there is free parking on its private forecourt.

Volunteering opportunities - www.do-it.org.uk

I have used it several times.
Voluntary work is fairly easy to find but paid part time work is proving nearly impossible. Folk just see that I have been ill with ME for 15 years and won't even interview me it would seem...sniff.

Voluntary Work Wanted - Hull area

Type of work: Will do anything that doesn't involve heavy physical work, being on your feet for long periods of time or possible confrontations/more than reasonable stress. Not keen on shop work but want something that involves contact with the general public. Receptionist work would be ideal.

Skills: Have good IT and communication skills.

Contact: Catie

Tips for successful voluntary work

Before I started on MIND reception, on my application form I explained my situation and made my limits really clear, whilst also pointing out that my health is improving and it is likely that I will be able to take on more work in the future.
I've played it safe and for now, have only offered to do an amount of work that I'm 99% sure I can definitely do, so as to be fair on everyone.
I explained the situation further when I had an interview, pointing out that I'm well enough now so that I won't be ringing in sick with my ME at the last minute - to reassure them that I will be reliable.

Recovery story - chakra healing

This is thanks to my Barbara Brennan chakra healer , who wrote an article on chakra healing of cancer in a local freebie alternative health magazine, the Green Handbookhttp://www.greenhandbook.co.uk/ (just acquired a website) - I picked it up when I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 years ago. So I told the NHS to back off (the Cumberland Infirmary didn't care about the M.E., all they could see was the cancer) and have been cancer-free for two and a half years thanks to him
. At our first meeting I told him that the cancer was NOT my main problem and he agreed. He also told me that he could SEE the M.E. , as mucus in my chakras.
Actually having somebody say that they could SEE the M.E. was very healing.
He calls it process work. Sometimes it's hands-on healing and some of it's in-depth counselling and that doesn't describe it by all means but that's as much as I feel able or willing to say about it.

Voluntary Work - Offered and Wanted

- If you are aware of any voluntary work opportunities available please send the details to me, Anne-Marie atnetwork@wellies.me.uk , including roughly what's involved, hours per week, where it is, level of flexibility and anything else you think will be useful.
- If you are interested in finding voluntary work, please send me similar info (again to network@wellies.me.uk ) - type of work, hours per week, where, and the type of skills you have to offer. NB don't assume you don't have any skills just because you may not have used them for a while! And things like communication skills or basic IT are worth including.
One important note: if you are on benefits it's a good idea to let the DWP know if you're taking on work, whether paid or unpaid.
Messages will be circulated by e-mail to everyone on the network, and will be added to the website anonymously unless you specifically ask to have your e-mail address included. To reply to a message in this section, please e-mail network@wellies.me.uk and your e-mail will be forwarded to the relevant person.
