I'm on the network, plese do circulate, it's Johanna :) Since I posted there have been a couple of developments to my situation.
Firstly, my IB went up on to long term, which filled in a little bit of the shortfall. Secondly, I was visited by a Welfare Advice Officer from the local council who completed an application for a Discretionary Housing Grant. I managed to get it, and it topped up my Housing Benefit, but it only lasted 6 months.
I have to re-apply over 6 months and it is discretionary. As for work, I have been told I am allowed to earn £20 per week that would not be taken away from either benefit. However I have not put this to the test as yet!
